chasingturkeysI’m so glad I included “Somewhere Around Elkhorn” as a category for the EGM posts! Every blog needs a catch-all place! And a brief report of this spring’s turkey season fits nicely here. Don’t you think?

ROUGH! That pretty much sums up this year’s season. It’s the consensus of most all turkey hunters – at least among those who hunt around here. I’ve heard all kinds of projections as to why the big birds seemed to have been scarce. A bad hatch a couple of years ago. Disease – perhaps from fertilizers or even armadillos. Or it could have been a drowning rain back in May of 2013. Whatever the cause – a hunter’s encounter with a mature longbeard was somewhat of a rarity.

In spite of the decline in the birds’ population, my family managed to harvest a few. My dad ended up bagging two. I put two in the freezer. My brother killed three (two of which he used the walk-behind decoy – now that’s fun!), and my eight-year-old nephew, Carter, tagged three. That’s a pretty good season for our family. But here’s the reality we all must keep before us. Even when it comes to success in the turkey woods, God is still the Sovereign agent of it all.

Think about that with me, my friend.

First Timothy 6:17 describes our Heavenly Father as “God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.” It’s true … your hole-in-one at the state park golf course, the savory sip of your favorite latte, your granddaughter’s dance recital, and even those designer shoes which you found on clearance … it’s all from the Lord!

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17

Let’s be a people of praise – mindful of God’s many, many, many blessings.

As we bite into a succulent turkey nugget, or as we drape the braid of spurs over the mantel, let us reflect on the One who “richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.”
